CrossFit CPHS is a non-profit Affiliate based at Carleton Place High School in Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada. Students and staff of CPHS have access to this unique facility run by Brian Dickie (CrossFit Level 1, Phys-Ed teacher). Dickie is an experienced athlete with a range of certifications from Alpine Skiing to Gymnastics, and over 25 years of experience coaching Volleyball, Track and Field, Cross Country Running, Nordic Skiing and Alpine skiing.
CrossFit CPHS is a community driven initiative; Dickie not only teaches the students and staff of CPHS the sport of fitness, he also has all six of his children, his wife, friends and local Junior A hockey players addicted to the daily WOD’s.
Students in the 11th and 12th grade at CPHS take Dickie’s Strength and Conditioning CrossFit course as a credited physical education course. He currently has over 100 students enrolled. All students keep blogs documenting their experiences and progress with CrossFit throughout the semester. For the initial month of the course, Dickie teaches them the skills and knowledge necessary to develop their own programs, and then coaches them through a series of individual fitness tests to establish baselines. He posts WOD’s daily, but they are only mandatory two days of the school week.
In Dickie’s words, “the kids are motivated, wildly enthusiastic, focused, and experiencing measurable success in their training. Their skill sets in terms of Olympic Lifting, Power Lifting, Strongman training, gymnastics and endurance training have grown exponentially.”
The affiliation has seen immeasurable success, and while Dickie notes that their training room is in a prime location (with access to the foyer and main hallway without interfering other classes, and the ability to walk outside within 5 meters of their door), they are still in need of support via fundraisers and equipment donation.
Dickie’s passion and dedication to CrossFit and his students is undoubtedly helping them build a foundation for their futures in not only personal training and fitness, but also goal-setting, dedication, nutrition and social camaraderie. His personal devotion to his students and the community he has created in a high-school lifting room is nothing short of admirable.
